Five Things To Do Before Picking Up Your Phone

If I had to guess you probably use your phone as an alarm (I mean who still has an actual alarm clock?). And instead of just letting your phone wake you up, before your feet even hit the ground, you fall into the black hole of checking your messages, opening every social media app, and refreshing your email inbox. (Insert hand raising girl emoji here). Yep, I hear ya. That’s me too! While it can be tempting to check out everything that happened overnight while you were getting your much needed zzz’s, implementing these 5 habits will increase your productivity and your overall wellbeing.

1. Gratitude Check

I know this may seem a little cliche, however, starting your day thinking of all the things you’re thankful for has its benefits. When I spend the extra few minutes feeling grateful, I wake up with a better attitude and outlook on the day. I feel a sense of joy, not dread, about what I need to do and accomplish that day.

2. Drink a Glass of Water

Think about it… you have just spent 7-8 hours (ideally) without any water! Your body may not be telling you it’s thirsty, but it is! Drinking water first thing in the morning has many health benefits: it fuels your metabolism, flushes out any toxins, keeps you hydrated, and may even make you eat less. I like to fill my Hydroflask at night with ice and water and keep it next to my bed so when I wake up in the morning I have nice, cold water to chug. Here’s a challenge for you: drink 8 oz. of water before you even leave your bed.

3. Get Fresh Air

Whether you’re out with your pups on a log walk, taking an early morning jog, or just simply opening your window, it’s important to get some fresh air in the morning. I love opening my bedroom windows when I wake up. The morning air seems to clear my lungs and give me more energy.

4. Get Moving

Ever wake up and feel sore and stiff? While it could be that you need a new mattress, it may more likely be because of the lack of blood circulation due to not moving while you sleep. So whether you start your day with some yoga stretches before you even leave your bed or by hitting the gym, it’s important to get up and get your blood pumping.

5. Identify Your Big 3 for the Day

What are the three BIGGEST things you need to get done today? These things should be your top priorities. They should be the three things that need to be done in order to reach your biggest and bests goals. By writing these three things down before checking Instagram and replying to emails, you are more likely to keep your day aligned to accomplishing what you set out to do.

What would your morning or even your life look like if you took the 10 to 30 minutes it takes to implement these 5 habits? I guarantee you if you take the time to do a little more reflecting, moving, and prioritizing, you will feel more refreshed, focused, and excited to take on the day!

What is the first thing you do when you wake up?

much love.
